My name is Maxx Yung, and I’m studying Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. I’m also minoring in Engineering Entrepreneurship, Mathematics, and Nanotechnology.

Here’s a README manual if you want to talk to me.

Most of time is currently split between studying at uni, researching at Corder Labs & Singh Nanotech Center, and Nanoneuro Systems.

I also happen to love note-taking (hence this website). I read, write, and publish almost anything, such as my aggregated list of Favorite Quotes.

I’m interested in many fields, and that has led to some very unique hobbies! Currently, exploring:

  • Deeptech startups: visionaries who want to solve hard problems and change the world are inspiring to witness. I’m very interested in working with Varda (read my memo on Varda!) as it matches my experience in bioengineering and materials engineering; Anduril partly because I find defense technologies simply cool but mostly because I believe the future of self-defense and warfare lies in autonomous swarm vehicles; Lightmatter because photonics-based computing will be the biggest acceleration of sustainable computing since the development of transistors; and Atomic Semi as a revolution in semiconductor fab design will greatly accelerate human progress.   • Space & astrophotography: I love space. Space is truly our final frontier that we will never be able to fully explore. Space photos are also just cool and my desktop, phone, and laptop wallpapers. I’m getting started in astrophotography as well, but it is very expensive and I live in a Bortle 10 zone (New York).
  • Keyboarding: I type all day (peak 230wpm). Why not get a 10 pound, brass-plated keyboard? Besides, I’ve learned to solder and got into PCB design because of modding keyboards, so it has served me well.
  • Programming: I’m not talented in programming, but I recognize its usefulness in the real-world. So I’m really trying to push through the DSA grind and make myself useful in some settings. Currently, Python and Rust! Here’s my GitHub.
  • Badminton stringing: The high cost of badminton stringing leaves badminton an unattractive, expensive sport. I first realized this in 11th grade, and have since spent >600 hours stringing 300+ rackets across New York City and Philadelphia every year. I charge 30-40% of typical prices (if you’re a non-profit community center, then it is free!) in an effort to encourage badminton as a sport in America. (Outdated website here.)
  • Self-hosting services: I was bullish on privacy, and it turns out I was right. Now, user data has become the most important commodity in this AI-centric future, and I’m irrationally afraid of being deepfaked onto some video. No thanks. I self-host on a 10 year old Dell tower, with some of my favorite programs being Immich, NextCloud and WireHole. The only bad experience I’ve had with this was being hacked once.
  • Coral reefing: I have raised reef tanks since I was 6. Corals are beautiful, and corals are becoming extinct. I spend a lot of my time fragging corals and donating them to local research institutions to figure out how to make corals resilient to climate change.
  • Alzheimer’s research: Starting from 7th grade till 12th grade, I spent 10+ hours a week discovering a novel pathway for treating memory degeneration. Won the International Regeneron Science Talent Search Semifinalist Award and the 2023 American Academy of Neurology Neuroscientist Award. Spoke at the 75th Annual US Neurology Conference, MIT, and Stanford Medicine.
